Vintage Photos:

It's out of doubt that the Germans have designed and produced more gliders than any other country in the world. It is also true that many gliders, designed outside Germany, have been “copied”, from the German ones. Many German gliders, designed across WWII, can be seen today in the Vintage Glider Meetings that take place every year in some part of Europe and further afield.

I asked myself how much the Italians contributed to the development of motorless flight and judging from what is left, I would have said that they did not do too much. Investigating more deeply, I had to change my mind as, actually, many machines were successfully designed in Italy. Over a few years, consulting old books and magazines, I discovered a number of talented designers who built very interesting machines.

The photos, which I am showing herewith, are just a few examples of sailplanes designed and built in Italy. There is in fact much more. I have considered as Italian Luigi Teichfuss, not only because he took Italian citizenship, but also because his sailplanes were designed and built in Italy, in Pavullo nel Frignano, near the city of Modena. In conclusion, I would say that we may be proud of the Italian contribution to the development of motorless flight, even if to appreciate it we must consult the photos which are all that remain.
